Universities urged to create well-rounded individuals beyond academics: Governor
Governor Shri Patel emphasized the need for universities to foster not just academic excellence, but also develop students into ethical, well-rounded individuals. Echoing the National Education Policy’s goals, he called for universities to integrate moral values, cultural awareness, and practical life skills into their curriculum. This, he believes, will equip graduates to be dedicated, sensitive, and responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.
Sunil Goyal, BHOPAL: In a recent address during the 101st meeting of the University Coordination Committee at Raj Bhavan, Governor Shri Mangubhai Patel emphasized the pivotal role of universities in not only imparting knowledge but also in shaping individuals into great human beings. Highlighting the objectives of the National Education Policy, Governor Patel stressed the importance of incorporating moral values, cultural traditions, and practical life skills alongside academic knowledge.
Governor Patel underscored the need for universities to instill in students a sense of social responsibility, environmental consciousness, and commitment to women empowerment. He asserted that a holistic education should go beyond mere academic prowess and include awareness and activism towards societal issues. Furthermore, he called for the integration of human values into university courses, emphasizing that the ultimate goal of education is to produce dedicated, sensitive, and hardworking citizens.
During his address, Governor Patel acknowledged the critical role universities play in shaping students’ personalities during their 4 to 5 years of study. He urged universities to foster qualities such as a commitment to the welfare of marginalized sections of society, active participation in social concerns, and a spirit of service towards the nation. The Governor also emphasized the importance of nurturing sensitivity, a fundamental aspect of human nature, and promoting a sense of reverence among the youth towards their parents.
Higher Education Minister Shri Inder Singh Parmar supported the proposal for employment-oriented courses in universities, advocating for its consideration by the coordination committee through a sub-committee. The meeting concluded with a decision that both private and government universities should register in 12-B of UGC, and eligible universities should apply for NAAC grading for the session 2024-25. Newly established universities must submit their applications within one year of completing the prescribed 6-year period. The minutes of the 100th Coordination Committee meeting were confirmed during this session, attended by key officials including Higher Education Commissioner Shri Nishant Varwade and Vice Chancellors of government and private universities.
