Gwalior gears up for centenary Tansen Samaroh: Cultural events to kick off from July

Sunil Goyal/Gwalior: The Tansen Samaroh, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in India and the world, is celebrating its centenary year this year. To commemorate this special occasion, a series of cultural events will be held in the city of Gwalior, the music capital of India, starting from July.

In a meeting held today, Collector Mrs. Ruchika Chauhan directed departmental officials to prepare a cultural calendar in collaboration with artists, art lovers, and government and non-government organizations. She emphasized the importance of incorporating the suggestions of experts in the field of music and art to ensure that the cultural calendar reflects the true spirit of Gwalior’s rich musical heritage.

Mrs. Chauhan further stated that Gwalior has been declared a “Music City” by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Therefore, the cultural calendar should be designed in a way that befits the city’s status as a hub of music. She also instructed the officials to organize events based on the calendar every month at prominent locations like the Baithak Mahal, Town Hall at Maharaj Bada, and Kala Vithika.

To ensure that a large number of residents participate in the centenary Tansen Samaroh, extensive publicity of these events should be undertaken, she added.

It is noteworthy that Gwalior is being adorned in line with the spirit of the Music City. An attractive gallery showcasing Indian classical musical instruments is being established near the Raja Mansingh Tomar Tiraha on Gandhi Road. Similarly, the Purani Chawani Tiraha on Morena Road has been designed on the theme of the music maestro Tansen. Cultural activities are being organized at the Baithak Mahal every week. Walls of other prominent roads in the city are also being decorated with captivating paintings.

It’s important to know that the Tansen Samaroh is a five-day music festival held annually in December in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious music festivals in India, and attracts renowned musicians from all over the country and the world.

This year’s centenary Tansen Samaroh is expected to be an even grander affair, with a special focus on showcasing the rich musical heritage of Gwalior. The cultural events that will be held in the lead-up to the festival will provide a fitting tribute to the legendary musician Tansen and will also give music lovers a chance to enjoy a variety of performances.
